Regardless, various free options have way more functionality than I or most people would ever need for home use, and if you need more for work your company generally has that covered for you.

The important part is to sort torrents by seeders, and always check the comments before downloading. I've gotten more unwanted software from the bundled crapware that legitimate installers sometimes contain with really confusing checkboxes. Never gotten a virus from a torrent, ever. As with anything online, if you're careful and know what you're doing and don't click on everything you see, it's rather safe. One common misconception about piracy I've found is that people think you are guaranteed to get loads of viruses. Been doing this for years before I went to college and started using the free Office from there. This tool has one "official" source from a forum post, and as long as you get it from the torrent posted there you shouldn't get any viruses. All you need to do is download a regular Office (or Windows, since it works for that too) ISO, and then use a tool to activate it. Well, TBH pirating Office is actually rather safe if you know what you're doing.

Even if I had no moral qualms over a hacked copy of Ms office though, I'd be too wary of malware. If it were free, sure, but that's basically just students (get off my lawn!). It's also relatively easy to get through illegitimate means MS Office is still the best option for personal use (assuming you don't need collaboration, which only Google Docs really does well) if you get it for free. It's gotten to the point that you'd be crazy to get MS office for personal use. Other than that though they're not necessary. Your best bet is to carve a new niche or cater to the anti-MS-at-all-cost crowd and then hopefully be acquired by MS like Visio, Wunderlist and Sunrise.Ĭomplex tasks in excel and PowerPoint are still best in MS Office and needed in many workplaces. It's hard to compete against Microsoft in productivity space head on because there's such a strong pull toward the Office suite.
